Cheryl Bates

Cheryl Bates is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Henderson State University and a Music Theory PhD student at the University of North Texas. She was a Teaching Fellow at UNT from 2014-2017.  Cheryl completed her Bachelor’s in Music Theory at the University of Oklahoma and an M.M and D.M.A. in Music Education at the University of Houston. She has taught all levels of music - elementary and secondary in public schools, and in higher education. Cheryl taught over a decade at Lone Star College and authored many grant awards for the music program there. She has served in leadership positions for the Texas Two Year College Choral Directors Association and presented papers at state, regional, and national music conferences. Her research interests include new opera, film music, and aural skills pedagogy.
